TMJ/Neuromuscular dentistry - How to Diagnose

Cochran Dental Care

There are five main diagnostic techniques:

Postural examination

This exam searches for imbalances in the body's mechanics and posture. Posture affects the relations of the lower jaw to the cranium, which can contribute to TMJ problems. Chiropractic care, physical therapy or massage therapy may be recommended in this case.

Craniocervical Examination

This is an evaluation of the planes of the skull and cervical ranges of motion of the head.

Limited Neurological Examination

TMJ can be caused by nerve or brain damage. This exam is a screening process used to detect such damage.

TMJ Examination

This exam tracks the range of jaw movement, including the velocity, smoothness, muscle coordination and crossover patterns of the jaw, skull and neck.

Muscle Palpation

This exam checks for tenderness and inflammation in the head, neck and shoulders.

These exams use various techniques for diagnosis -- including both physical and visual exams as well as X-rays
