Sedation dentistry vs. sleep dentistry
Cochran Dental Care
Sedation dentistry involves the administration of a sedative, which you take at home about one hour before your dental appointment. During the procedure, you'll be in a deeply relaxed state, although you'll be able to respond. After the procedure, you'll wake feeling refreshed, with very little memory of what was done. The sedative lasts about six hours.
Sleep dentistry requires an anesthesiologist (a doctor who has specialized in anesthesia), or a nurse anesthetist, who likewise has done advanced training in anesthesia. He or she determines the correct dosage, administers your anesthesia, and monitors your vital signs throughout your dental procedure(s). You will be unconscious, asleep and unable to respond. When Dr. Cochran has finished working, the anesthesiologist or anesthetist will stay with you until you are fully awake and alert again.
You will need a pre-arranged ride home, as you will still be too groggy to drive safely.
Both procedures are safe, but must be administered by specially trained medical personnel. Sleep dentistry is typically used when the procedure is especially complex, painful, or when the patient has an unusually severe phobia of dental procedures, noises or surgery.
Sedation dentistry and sleep dentistry are excellent ways to alleviate the trauma of dental work. Dental anxiety is a common problem for many people. Also, sedation and sleep dentistry are excellent ways to undergo numerous dental procedures all during the course of one day, as opposed to repeated appointments.
