A root canal is a surgical procedure requiring anesthesia and at least two trips to the dentist.
Sometimes, the soft tissue inside a pulp can become diseased and can start to pose a threat to your heath. A root canal is a procedure where that diseased or decayed pulp is removed, then the pulp chamber and root canal is cleaned and sealed. If dental pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can lead to pain or abscess. There are a variety of causes which can lead to an infection or inflammation -- decay, cracks, chips or even injury.
In the first part of the root canal procedure, the infected pulp is removed. The inside of the canal -- the canal is a channel inside the root -- is then cleaned, then filled and sealed with great care.
During the second appointment, a crown or other restoration will be placed on the tooth. The tooth will then continue to function like any other tooth and look completely natural!
Generally, a root canal and the restoration of the natural teeth is less expensive than the alternative of having the tooth extracted. A tooth extraction usually requires a bridge or implant, which is more expensive than a root canal.
Afterwards, there may be some initial sensitivity, but over time your restored teeth will be just like your other teeth and look great too.
