Endodontics -FAQ
Cochran Dental Care
What are the signs of needing an endodontic treatment?
How much does the procedure cost?
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the dental pulp. The dental pulp is the soft tissue inside the root canal of the tooth. If the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can lead to pain or abscess. There are a variety of causes which can lead to an infection or inflammation -- decay, cracks, chips or even injury. This can lead to major problems if not addressed in a timely manner.
A root canal is a procedure where the diseases pulp is removed, then the pulp chamber and root canal is then cleaned and sealed. A root canal and an endodontic treatment are two different names for the same procedure. In the procedure, the infected pulp is removed. The inside of the canal -- a channel inside the root -- is then cleaned, then filled and sealed. Afterwards, during a second appointment, a crown or other restoration will be placed on the tooth. The tooth will then continue to function like any other tooth and help restore your smile!
This is a surgical procedure requiring anesthesia, and at least two trips to the dentist.
An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in root canal procedures. In addition to dental school, endodontists have two or more years in specialized training. They perform routine as well as very complex dental procedures. Endodontists are also experienced at finding the cause of oral and facial pain that has been difficult to diagnose.
What are the signs of needing an endodontic treatment?
Signs can include pain in the tooth, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness to touch and chewing, discoloration, swelling, drainage and lymph node tenderness.
Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms, and only a qualified endodontist can determine what treatment is necessary.
How much does the procedure cost?
The cost varies depending upon the complexity of the individual procedure. Molars are more difficult to treat, and usually more expensive. Most dental insurance polices provide some coverage.
Generally, a root canal and the restoration of the natural teeth is less expensive than the alternative of having the tooth extracted. A tooth extraction usually requires a bridge or implant, which is more expensive than a root canal.
What care is needed to be done after the procedure?
Until the tooth in question is restored, the treated tooth should not be used for chewing or biting. Once the restoration is complete, however, the maintenance is similar to that of all your other teeth -- brushing, flossing and regular checkups and cleaning.
Most endodontically treated teeth last as long as other, natural teeth. Occasionally, however, the restored tooth may become diseased. If this occurs, redoing the procedures will usually save the tooth.
