A root canal is a procedure where a diseased dental pulp is removed, then the pulp chamber and root canal is cleaned and sealed. The dental pulp is the soft tissue inside the root canal of the tooth. If the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can lead to pain or abscess. There are a variety of causes which can lead to an infection or inflammation -- decay, too many dental procedures, cracks, chips or even injury.
A root canal and an endodontic treatment are two different names for the same procedure. In the procedure, the infected pulp is removed. The inside of the canal -- a channel inside the root -- is then cleaned, then filled and sealed. Afterwards, during a second appointment, a crown or other restoration will be placed on the tooth. The tooth will then continue to function like any other tooth.
This is a surgical procedure requiring anesthesia, and at least two trips to the dentist.
A root canal is necessary when the nerve or blood supply of the tooth becomes infected.
Signs of an endodontic problem can include pain in the tooth, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness to touch and chewing, discoloration, swelling, drainage and lymph node tenderness.
Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms, and only a qualified endodontist can determine what treatment is necessary.
